Get rid of the LE/HD divide!
Heck, get rid of M-Powered while you're at it, and just have Universal Pro Tools software for goodness sake. You can still have the expensive and cheaper hardware options. But heck, even if the software is the same across the board, a big time studio is probably still going to go for the HD system while the non-big-bucks users will still take LE routes.

Though surely I'm missing some aspects of this that make it not so good an idea.

Great idea but its been said. MANY TIMES. Although it should be said MANY MORE TIMES.

Yes! I wish I could many many more times on my personal frustration with the huge LE-HD divide.
No single quirk of the software drives me nuts than having to explain to clients & other users that you can do that but not this just because this is HD and that is HD or heaven forbid M-Audio.
I've worked for software companies for 13 years and simply dont understand why a company would want to support so many different versions of their software. Shrinking this divide and simplifying the software to 2 versions simply makes sense. It allows for AVID to save money on development support and allows customers to get more features more often. Come on AVID get to work....

Heck, why not just the ONE version, limited ONLY by the abilities of your computer and/or interface. If you wanna plunk down the bucks for an HD system, there ya go. If you just need a 003, same. Of course I realize the reasoning for LE is to try and get people to go, "Wow, HD doesn't have this limitation...I think I'm gonna go THAT route!" Ugh.

And now their new big thing is M-Audio is AVID and Digidesign is AVID, why not make Pro Tools AVID that works with all the product lines. Or atleast just kill M-Powered and Essential, keep LE and make Pro Tools HD Native. Seriously, WTF.

as a m-powered user I cannot agree
ewillhelm 1 month ago
Does that mean you're happy with the restrictions placed on M-Powered that don't exist on the other versions?

How can you not agree with this? You didn't even leave your reasons. Not the best analogy but what if video game consoles started releasing different versions that only worked with certain televisions. Lets say PS3 only worked with certain Sony tvs that were way to expensive but i could go get a 360 that would work on anything. Same difference if you ask me.

I am a M-Powered user and the main thing I hate is using M-Audio's most crappiest hardware on the planet.
I hate M-Audio gear.
In some aspects I do agree, that having just 2 softwares for Protools would be very beneficial to everyone.
PT|HD for those HD users and Protools Platinum for everyone else.
I would name name it LE or M-Powered but rather Protools Platinum Edition.
sounds more serious and way cooler than LE name.

and one main thing of all.
Take away the mandatory hardware for Protools Platinum Edition.
every other DAW does not require special hardware to use their software.
as long as its 24-bit / 192-kHz its fine.

but having the manditory hardware just plain sucks.
do away with manditory hardware.

EXCEPT FOR HD.
that stays just the way it is.

thats my honest opinion.
