Batch Track Naming

In current PT If I need to name 30 tracks e. g. Foley 1--Foley 30 I need to do it one track at a time. This is rather time consuming when dealing with large sessions. It would be nice if I could select a number of tracks, type "Foley" and let Pro Tools assign consecutive numbers to "Foley" automatically. PT should be smart enough to understand that if I type "Foley 10" I need track names start from 10 and on.

And it would be nice if we could get this batch naming in the IO Setup window too.

  1. There is a lot of spreadsheet style functions to do with naming, numbering, finding & Replacement that would great to see!

  2. quickeys.

let's try to get features we can't fix with other solutions

Let's try to NOT use other solutions for things that should be in PT. I'd prefer this feature to exist on any PT system I'm working at, not just my own studio. I'm yet to see quickeys at the studios I'm working at. And I personally don't use quickeys and don't plan to.

  4. dude, the list of major bugs still outstanding is so long.

in an ideal world you'd have your feature but the reality is that AVID needs to spend resources fixing stuff that's really broken.

This is not bug report forum, but a feature request. Let Avid decide where to put it's resources. BTW, the feature I'm asking for exists in SSL digital consoles for at least 10 years. dude.

When rename a track there should be an option of rename multiple track at once.

Or create new tracks with subsequent names.

    1. yes, or the ability to cascade name all tracks selected, so if I have 10 tracks selected and I name the first track "track 1", all the other tracks should autoname themselves "track 2", track 3", etc...

  8. Why not ask for applescript support? This and other requests could be easily done with simple scripts (e.g. photoshop)

  9. Not to mention they have this feature for batch naming regions... It's not that different.

  10. I would love to see this feature too within pt - logic pro does it in the environment window... it can't be more than a line or two of code can it? ha!

  11. Merging Pyramix has a spreadsheet style track naming feature that saves us hours, as we can tab between track names. Would appreciate something similar in PT

  12. justin, I can see your point, but I would really suggest trying quickeys. I just ran the test for fun: created and named 100 tracks 'Foley01'...'Foley100' in 82 seconds. I can't see how naming tracks can so terribly slow down your workflow. You can easily name 30 tracks while showing the first cue to your talent. As a sidemark, I personally would name tracks 'fSteps', 'fFX', and 'fPresence' by default instead of naming them all 'foley'. Even faster: use template sessions or import tracks from template sessions. Will save you big time setting up routing as well.

  13. It's a feature that has existed in Logic since almost 20 years. Select multiple objects (regions, environment objects, channelstrips...), initiate rename, and then if you place a number after the text then everything gets named the same but with sequential numbers. So if you call the first track "Foley 1", then you get "Foley 2", "Foley 3", "Foley 4" etc... It would take 3 seconds to name 100 tracks, not 82 seconds with the QuickKeys method that you have to set up in the first place.

And Avid has more than one programmer, and the person who works on DSP code isn't pulled out of commission to work on stuff like this. This and region bins are staple features that ought to have existed in the 1990's, things that actually improve workflow daily... hourly.. minutely!

  14. I have been asking for this for 14 years. I have given up all hope.

It seems that all they need to do is incorporate the Region naming tool into the track names, but I have been told many times that that is much harder than I would imagine.

  15. When renaming tracks they should just place all selected track name fields and comments into ONE window. You can then Tab through them or click on them.

A tick box allows you to choose between batch rename (one name field with an added number) or manually rename where (as mentioned above) all track name fields are seen in one window.

Please Avid do make sure that PT remembers the names that I already typed when I accidentally click on the 'Batch rename' button in the window or when I decide to not batch rename after all and de-click the tick box again to get back to manually renaming the tracks.

  16. I have a work around for now using a custom EUCON macro. If you have Artist Control, Transport or one of the larger Eucon controllers.. try this.

(these are windows commands, I trust that you are smart enough to translate them into mac)

For this example, we'll say we want to name 8 dialog tracks.

    1. Create a new mono track, name it Dialog

    2. Duplicate that track 16 times

    3. Delete the original Dialog track so only "dup" tra remain

    4. double click the first copy track to access the naming dialog and run this script on a eucon button.

    KEY \z (END)

    KEY \r (RIGHT ARROW)

    KEY \l (LEFT ARROW)

    KEY \b\b\b\b (BACKSPACE x4)

    KEY \s (SPACEBAR)

    KEY CTL+\r (control+Right arrow)

    5. Repeat 8 times.. done

NOTE: a second macro must be adjusted and used for double digits. On my unit I have namer1 and namer2

  17. I ran into this same frustration editing hundreds of ringtones. It would have saved me HOURS to have this feature! I'd still love to see it. Very practical, and a seemingly simple promgramming task.

  18. Auto rename doesn't do what you need it to?

You just select regions/clips, go to the auto rename menu on the region/clip menu, type in a name, a suffix or prefix number and

voila all regions/clips are renamed starting with whatever number you pick.

Its been a function in PT since PT 4 I think. Or do you need it to do something different.

    1. Tracks, not regions.
