Pre-fader/insert automation option

Please allow the user to write volume automation before processing and independent of fader level.

This would allow allow independent level control before processing (e.g before compression) there by letting us optimise levels without bouncing.

This has numerous uses:

Quiet verses could be automated to balance with a louder chorus while the overall level balance of the track could be controlled with the regular fader. (thinking about it, it would be handy if you could assign it to be either a pre or post insert fader as well seeing from colour coding which it is for sanities sake)

Its also perfect for dynamics processing. Same scenario as before; you keep the over all pre-processing level of the quiet verse nearly matched to the loud chorus to avoid heavy compression and rewrite the macro dynamics afterwards. Result: controlled dynamics without over-compression.

Bouncing and rebounding just to test how hard to automate vs. compress is a real time sink for me and I'm considering changing to Nuendo for this... it would also be good for post production. So, pretty please with a cherry on top?

  1. Once again, a problem that would be solved by region/clip based gain - pre fader and pre insert corrections to recorded levels.

Agreed Matt but this would be more flexible than adjusting a single region (but you could still do that) as you could also write the micro dynamics before compression. If you have a dynamic player you can take out any large peaks before they get slammed; if you really want them you could put them back after but sounding much nicer that after going through a limiter...

  3. 1) Take audio track and send to an aux

    2) Put compresson on aux and set to taste

    3) Use audio track fader to write your level automation

    4) You now have even compression :)

Admittedly I would very much like clip based gain in the way that Nuendo/Pyramix offers!

Yeah I was doing that before but since I automate every track pre compression this approach tends to expand the mixer somewhat. And although you can hide the tracks etc. its a very cluttered way of doing thing; having in-line style gain control with automation capabilities would be so much tidier...

Speaking conceptually a hot key could switch between whether your onscreen fader represents region, pre or post insert gain; write what you need, hide it until you need to change something which would be just key stroke away.

Wouldn't you agree this to be a practical way of offering a lot of flexibility in a simple way?
